Butoh-Atelier 2026

The upcoming Butohatelier Totem.Dance – a ritual sculpture deals with ethnological symbolism that was originally brought into the collective consciousness by the First Nations peoples of North America. There, the term totem refers not only to the religious-mythological meaning embodied by an animal, such as the thunderbird, or a plant, but also to kinship with an ancestral clan. The totem poles erected for this purpose embody these symbols in an artistic and sculptural way. The representations on these poles vary considerably between the respective indigenous tribes and represent an incredible diversity. Today, totems are not only associated with the peoples of America, but also with other early ethnic groups, such as the Australian Aborigines.

In the atelier, we want to explore the traditional concept of the totem and try to translate it into our modern times. The following questions are central to this: What is my totem and what might it look like? Is it an animal, a plant, a tree or perhaps something immaterial? What deep meaning does it have for me? How can I express my totem and dance with it? During the preparatory phase of the workshop, we will deal with these topics intensively in the class and explore them in specific improvisations. We will also examine the relationship between Butoh and the theme of totems in more detail and try to identify points of contact. In the subsequent intensive rehearsals, we will then combine our findings into a joint choreography and finally unite them into a creative composition, which will culminate in a public performance with live music.

Planned performance at the Hall 50 of the Domagkateliers in Munich in April 2026.
