TANZWERKSTATT EUROPA: Ian Kaler
And for the time being

schwere reiter

Ian Kaler is a choreographer, performer and filmmaker. As of 2010, he has developed his creative practice through a series of choreographic works across various (audio-visual) media, moving ever more strongly between contemporary dance and narrative film. “And for the time being” emerged from a long-standing exchange with the performer, movement and fashion director Stéphane ‘Peeps’ Moun. In their piece “Last Dance / And for the time being”, they reflect on growth, artistic practices and contexts, friendship and the idea of (chosen) family as complicity.
The solo “And for the time being” examines utilizing traces of autobiography as a choreographic setting. From his interest in autobiographical fiction as a writing practice and the development of fictional characters based on personal experience, Kaler creates a dreamlike encounter with a horse – his stage partner and fictional alter ego.
Creative captions, which Kaler uses to expand the concept of conventional subtitling, establish a parallel narrative level to the intimate events on stage. The play is embedded in a landscape by set designer and visual artist, Stephanie Rauch. Kaler's long-time artistic companion, French music producer rRoxymore, composed the atmospheric electronic soundtrack for the performance.

Ian Kaler studied Transmedial Art at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and completed the pilot course BA Contemporary Dance, Context, Choreography at the Inter-University Center for Dance (HZT) at the Berlin University of the Arts. He holds a Master's degree in Filmmaking (Directing Fiction) from Goldsmiths, University of London.
The core themes of his work include embodiment and coming of age viewed through a transmasculine lens, the figurative composition of the still and moving body, the relationship between bodies and the spaces they inhabit, horses, other sentient beings and encounters with them.
Kaler develops interdisciplinary stage and video works together with his long-time companions. His choreographic works and stage pieces have been performed at TANZWERKSTATT EUROPA in Munich, HAU – Hebbel am Ufer Berlin, Tanzfabrik Berlin, Sophiensaele Berlin, Uferstudios Berlin, Mousonturm Frankfurt/Main, PACT Zollverein Essen, Schwankhalle Bremen, Schauspiel Leipzig, Hellerau Dresden, Berghain Berlin, Tanzquartier Wien, ImPulsTanz – Vienna International Dance Festival, Festspielhaus St. Pölten, Szene Salzburg, STUK Leuven, Dansens Hus Stockholm, Norrlansoperan Umea, Southbank London, Side Step Festival Helsinki and the National Theater Bucharest. Outside Europe, he has toured his work in Mexico and Colombia.
