The Beginnings

Concept & First Steps

The founding of Tanztendenz München was preceded by the event "Tanztage 1985" in the Dachauer Halls. This was a first overview and gathering of the independent dance scene in Munich. The following year featured the "Tanztage 1986", which matured into a real festival of the independent scene in Munich. After this event forces were joined to form a collective. Rehearsal rooms were found and a production center was equipped in the Lindwurmhof, an old art nouveau style storage house in Lindwurmstraße 88.
Tanztendenz was founded in 1987 as the first collective for contemporary dance in Germany. Its goal was to improve the working conditions of independent contemporary choreographers. The founding members were Jessica Iwanson, Angelika Meindl, Micha Purucker, Birgitta Trommler and Bonger Voges, the directors of the five founding dance companies. The notion of a joint company did not prove effective from an artistic point of view and it was abandoned after one season.
In 2007 Tanztendenz had grown to 22 members and celebrated its 20 years anniversary with a joint open-space evening. They displayed their artistically distinct positions with overlapping and complementing sequences. And the dance goes on!
Since April 2008 we have a new venue for dance in Munich: schwere reiter - an experimental venue for the independent scene for in-house productions, cooperations and guest performances for dance, music and theatre and performance. Covering several genres, this initiative by Tanztendenz München, PATHOS transport theater and Kunstbahnsteig is sponsored by the Munich Department of Arts and Culture.
