About

FREE ART NEEDS INDEPENDENCE

In 1987, five Munich-based choreographers founded the first association of independent dance professionals in Germany with the support of the City of Munich's Department of Culture: Tanztendenz München e.V.

Their goal was to improve production conditions for independent contemporary choreographers.

Today, with 24 members, we have become much more than just a production community. We are a place where art is created based on artistic principles: from within, with a long-term perspective, and tailored to the specific needs of the artists.

ARTISTS FOR ARTISTS

ARTISTS FOR ARTISTS

ARTISTS FOR ARTISTS

Guided by this principle, Tanztendenz creates spaces for dance, research, experimentation and production. With an open door policy for local, national and international guests, it provides freelance choreographers with a space for various formats of exchange, networking and discourse. To this end, the association operates three professionally equipped studios and an organisational office in the Lindwurmhof.

CREATING PUBLIC AWARENESS

The Tanzkalender brings together all professional events in Munich's independent dance scene on a quarterly basis.
The digital interview magazine TTmag complements this offering, providing a platform for in-depth discussions about aesthetics, concepts, and developments in dance.

Tanztendenz is also the co-initiator and co-operator of the schwere reiter venue, together with its partners PATHOS München and scope – Spielraum für aktuelle Musik. Located in the creative quarter on Dachauerstraße, the venue pursues an independent curatorial concept.

Through projects such as “Open Studios”, “STANDPUNKT.e – welcome to My World’”, “side.kicks”, the “Choreographers‘ Studio”, and the expansion of the residency programme, Tanztendenz is reinforcing its artistic identity and solidifying the organisation's mission for the long term.

Alongside these curatorial and structural initiatives, Tanztendenz offers regular training sessions and workshops, providing further support for professional dancers in their artistic development.

All of this is the result of creative collaboration and the voluntary commitment of its members – in an environment that protects and promotes the artistic process, creating space for independent work.

Tanztendenz München e.V. is supported by the Department of Culture of the City of Munich.
