Charlie Morrisey: Continued Adventures of the Apple
As part of TANZWERKSTATT EUROPA
Discover the power of contact improvisation! This workshop offers you a dynamic introduction to the basic principles of contact improvisation – open to anyone who enjoys moving, regardless of their level of experience. Explore your body, discover new impulses and continue to develop your own movement language.
The focus is on fundamental movement qualities such as rolling, shifting weight, falling, and gliding effortlessly into and out of the floor. You’ll experience your body in dialogue with gravity and playfully explore the giving and receiving of weight, as well as the interplay between balance and counterbalance. Physical intelligence and a wide range of movement come together in a practical, exploratory space that provides a context for both individual exploration and shared experience.
Through clear structures and guided improvisations, you will deepen your kinaesthetic awareness and develop a finer sense of movement and its possibilities. How do we listen to our own bodies? How does this inner listening give rise to immediate, authentic movement?
The title refers to Steve Paxton’s image of Newton’s apple – an invitation to consider the body in relation to gravity and the ongoing experiment of being in motion.
Charlie Morrissey is a performer, teacher and director who has been working with movement for more than 35 years. His practice is influenced and inspired by collaborations with artists such as Steve Paxton, Lisa Nelson, Scott Smith, K. J. Holmes, Kirstie Simson, Karen Nelson, Siobhan Davies, Katye Coe, Andrea Buckley, Becky Edmunds and many others. He has worked on performance projects in the UK and internationally in theatres, galleries and site-specific contexts.
