Filmscreening: MONK IN PIECES
The initial reviews were scathing and sexist, yet artists such as Philip Glass and Merce Cunningham were quick to recognise her musical and choreographic talent. Through her performances, Meredith Monk became one of the most fascinating American artists. Billy Shebar was able to accompany Monk for years and gained access to her unique archive, including photographs and diaries. In conversations, Monk reflects on her personal and artistic journey, as well as her experiences of exclusion and loss. As she grows older, she plans to let go of her work and place it in the hands of younger generations. Editor Sabine Kreyenbühl masterfully assembles a multidimensional tribute that reflects Monk’s versatility.
